CONSTITUTION OF THE PENSACOLA HIGH

SCHOOL CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL HONOR

SOCIETY OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ARTICLE 1. NAME AND PURPOSE

Section 1. The name of this chapter shall be the Pensacola High School Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools.

Section 2. The purpose of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in pupils of Pensacola High School.

ARTICLE II. MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. Membership of this chapter shall be known as active and graduate.

Section 2. Membership of this chapter shall be based on scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Section 3. Members shall be elected by a faculty committee. This committee shall be headed by the advisor(s).

Section 4. Candidates shall have spent at least one semester in Pensacola High School and shall be second semester sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a cumulative scholastic grade average of 3.5 unweighted from their entire high school career. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be, for this chapter, the required scholastic achievement for admission to candidacy for membership. Their eligibility shall the be considered on their service, leadership, and character.

Section 5. Members shall be inducted bi-annually in the fall and spring.

Section 6. Candidates with poor citizenship may be removed from the chapter or placed on probation at the discretion of the Executive Committee by blind review.

Section 7. Any member who falls below the standards which were the basis for his selection to membership-for one semester--shall be placed on probation,

Section 8. A National Honor Society member who transfers from another school and brings a letter from the former principal or chapter advisor to the Pensacola High School chapter advisor shall be accepted automatically as a member in this chapter. Transfer students must meet the membership standards of this chapter within one semester in order retain membership.

ARTICLE III. VIOLATIONS/PROBATION

Section 1. Violations of the requirements and regulations shall be referred to the Executive Committee made up of the officers and advisor(s).  

Section 2. Seniors must have completed ten hours of individual service work by the end of the fifth six weeks, or they will not graduate with cords. All members must turn in five hours of service work by the last meeting of each semester.

Section 3. Members who do riot attend mandatory activities (unless excused in advance by the advisor) will be placed on probation.

Section 4. Failure to pay dues by the designated date will result in the member being placed on probation.

Section 5. Any member who falls below a 3.5 unweighted grade point average on two consecutive semester grading periods shall lose membership.

Section 6. Probation is a formal warning that a member is not in good standing.

Section 7. Members shall be taken off probation after one semester if they have corrected all deficiencies which caused their probation.

Section 8. Any member, on probation for two consecutive semesters will be dismissed from the chapter upon recommendation of the Executive Committee. Seniors on probation at the end of the first semester of their senior year, will have grades and conduct evaluated at the end of the fifth six weeks. If their grade point average is 3.5 or higher and the member is otherwise in good standing, the member will have all privileges reinstated.

Section 9. Members who resign or are dismissed are never again eligible for membership or its benefits.

ARTICLE  IV. OFFICERS

Section 1. The officers of this chapter shall be president(s), junior vice-president, senior vice-president, recording secretary, Corresponding secretary, treasurer, parliamentarian(s), and historian.

Section 2. No member shall serve as the same officer for more than one year.

Section 3. A majority of votes cast shall be necessary to elect any officer into this chapter. If the first vote does not yield a majority, a second vote shall be taken on the two candidates who have received the highest number of votes.

Section 4. It shall be the duty of the president(s) to preside at the meetings of this chapter. The president shall have been a member at least one complete semester before the election.

Section 5. The senior vice-president shall fill the chair in the absence of the president(s) and shall direct special projects.

Section 6. The secretaries shall keep the minutes of the meetings, record all business, and keep all records on file.

Section 7. The treasurer(s) shall receive and distribute all funds of the chapter and keep an accurate account of receipts and disbursements.

Section 8. The parliamentarian(s) shall keep the meetings in order and has the power to dismiss members from a meeting.

Section 9. The historian shall be responsible for annual records covering all functions of the chapter.

Section 10. Failure of an officer to carry out his or her duties as specified by the Constitution and as seen fit by the faculty sponsor may be removed from office and another member appointed by the Executive Committee.

ARTICLE V. ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS

Section 1. The activities of this chapter shall be subject to the approval of the advisors.

Section 2. Each member shall be required to complete ten hours of service work per year, at least five by the end of the first semester. Service project specifications are at the discretion of the Executive Committee.

Section 3. The Honor Society Award shall be given to the member who most completely fulfills the qualifications of the leadership, scholarship, and character, and who shall have attended Pensacola High School at least one full semester. This award, as well as other awards which shall be given as seen fit by the advisors and Executive Committee, shall be given on a yearly basis.

Section 4. Special meetings, approved by the Executive Committee, may be called by the president.

Section 5. All meetings shall be open meetings and shall be held under the sponsorship of the principal or some other member of the faculty selected.

Section 6. This chapter shall conduct its meetings according to the rules of order of the chapter.

ARTICLE VII. DUES

Section 1. Annual dues shall be subject to the approval of the Executive Committee for this chapter.

ARTICLE VIII. AMENDMENTS/INTERPRETATION

Section 1. This chapter's constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the chapter provided that the proposed amendment has been approved by the Executive Committee. Notice of the vote must be given at least two weeks prior to the meeting at which the vote is taken.

Section 2. Any discrepancy in the interpretation of this Constitution shall be clarified by ruling of the advisors and the Executive Committee.

Section 3. Although the rules governing the activities of this chapter do not require the approval of the National Council, they must be consistent with the policies of the National Council of the National Honor Society.
